I am a textile and mixed media artist who has always enjoyed using paint. I started off painting landscape watercolours but moved into practice that combines and acrylics and various media. I find a deep satisfaction in the synthesis of materials and ideas and am particularly interested in creative thinking and process.
The natural world is a constant source of enchantment where I am drawn to smaller objects and elements. For the last few years, much of my exploration has been around stone and stone walls, both in terms of their physical and psychological attributes.
I am also deeply interested in containment which is a thread that has remained with me all my life – I love boxes, houses and small sets of drawers etc. and I’m currently exploring making bowls which are then painted and layered with abstract marks and shapes.
As a textile artist I have always combined paint and fabric, usually hand-stitching into it and creating vessels, scrolls and other one-off pieces. I’m excited to be working on freer, more expressive marks both in painting and textile art. In each area, I use a lot of layering and in particular, enjoy using wet-strength tissues and papers to create more complex surfaces and textures.
