First time visitors to the HAS website – WELCOME!
Thank you for visiting our website, we hope that you enjoy browsing it and seeing the various activities on offer as well as the work of some of our members.
HAS has been in existence since 1890, originally as a society for the artistic elite of Huddersfield that new members had to go through a selection process to join. However, it has evolved through the years up to the present time and is now a very different set-up.
HAS is a vibrant, welcoming meeting of like minds that is constantly changing and improving, providing interest and stimulation to the membership, currently at 100. Anyone in the locality with an interest in art can join and take advantage of the many exciting and inspiring activities on offer. These range from demonstrations, workshops, portraiture, life drawing, outdoor days and ‘members’ own’ days when the socialisation is as important as the art created. The highlight of our year is the Annual Exhibition that showcases some of the amazing works of art created by our members.
HAS is run by a dedicated Council of ten members who organise dates, venues, demonstrators, exhibitions, as well as the vital financial support needed, and even transport when necessary. Council meet regularly in order to keep everything running smoothly, and are constantly looking at new ideas for the society, particularly in relation to the use of technology.
This is very important at the moment; due to social distancing the council are meeting on line, and are sending out various challenges to members, in order that they feel they are still very much part of the society and can share a variety of activities with each other as they wish. HAS is a caring society and tries very hard to meet the needs of its members, even in these difficult times.

Members
Welcome to the new, redesigned and updated website, which is for you to use and enjoy, and hopefully share with each other. It is hoped that members will post work, as well as thoughts and ideas as blogs, and generally see what everyone else is doing. It is currently a work in progress, and will change and adapt to how members respond, so please make your feelings clear and say what you like and feel is useful, and obviously what you don’t like.
The society is actively responding to the Covid 19 crisis, and will continue to do so. Please make yourself aware of the Lockdown Activities page, which illustrates the online activities available to members; the Saturday Challenge, the Portrait Challenge and the 30 day Challenge. Please join in with these as and when you want, and watch out for more in the future.
